The new tapestry @ Willem Twee, Den Bosch
Yes, I’ve finished a new tapestry! Based on one of the street photos I took during my visit to Tehran, Iran.
The tapestry and photos from a brand new photo series (‘Men of Quality’) will be on view until the 26th of May. Below you can also see the banner I made in Iran which was used to take photos on the streets with passersby. The banner is made entirely by hand, its letters exist out of beadwork. All fabrics used for the banner were purchased in Tehran, Iran.
New work ‘Korean Promises’ at CIVIL DISOBEDIENCE @ In de Ruimte, Ghent
Oh look at that! This new baby will be on my portfolio website soon.
More info:
Brad Pitt himself didn’t show up at AK24….
….but we had a blast! Look at my wallpaper, isn’t it amazing?
If you didn’t manage to get your own piece of Brad wallpaper, shout out to me and I could perhaps send you a poster… They are popping up every here and there around Utrecht so pay close attention and you might be able to spot one.
Young Utrecht Delight @ Galerie Sanaa, Utrecht
28th of April-9th of June: Young Utrecht-based (or related) artists at Galerie Sanaa!
My brain was quite foggy last couple weeks so I didn’t think about updating this blog earlier… hence the silence, hence this can’t really count as an announcement anymore, but at least there are some pictures of the fun we had.
If you pay close attention to the photos you might even see a new work…….
Some text from the Sanaa website (yes, I’m lazy beyond belief today):
Galerie Sanaa presents Young Utrecht Delight. Showing the combined but diverse work of young HKU alumni. Jessica Skowroneck shows pure paintings that radiates with light. RaQuel van Haver is interested in the interaction and abrasion between identity, background and ethnicity. Guy Vording looks for photographs and texts that almost always have to do with events where the control is lost. In the sculptural paintings of Cecilia Rebergen she searches for the boundaries of the painted object. Joyce Overheul creates and manipulates human behavior and confronts people with their own actions through multiple media. Benine du Toit analyses tensions, emotion and reluctance toward one another in South Africa. Mariaan van den Berg focuses on adaptability through her spacial works. The work of Robert Roest is visually rooted in both the contemporary world of new media as in the history of painting.

The Gaze: Them
Last Saturday I finished shooting documentation material in The Hague for my website and a new performance video.
I’d like to thank all the amazing performers and their efforts, without them it would be impossible to make the documentation of the performance itself a success!!
The video of the performance will be shown for the first time at the BYOB (next Thursday in Utrecht, see this blog post).
For now, here’s a sneak peek!
Special thanks goes to: Jowi Kemper, Heekyung Ryu, Giovanni Maisto Ferreira, Michiel Tollig, Mandy Chaigneau, Ilona Schipper, Marisa Conde, Vincent Baeza Parra, Ken Bridgen, Jolanda Jansen, Sarah Atzori, Alessandro, Herwin Zweers

Great news!
Two days ago I heard I have received a Stipendium Program for Emerging Artists, granted by the Mondriaan Fund!! I’m so happy it almost hurts!
Something about the Mondriaan Fund:
“The Mondriaan Fund is a publicly financed fund for visual art and cultural heritage. It supports innovative projects and activities by visual artists, intermediaries (curators and critics), museums and other heritage organizations, art institutions, archives, galleries and commissioning parties. All grants are awarded with a view to promoting the production and presentation of relevant Dutch visual art and heritage in the Netherlands and abroad, where a commercial market is (yet) undeveloped.”
This will make so many things so much easier in the near future. I was saving money to buy a professional video camera and decent projector but it was taking way too long and it really started to hold me down when exhibiting new projects with non-decent equipment…. So this will be really, really helpful! Also I want to use a part of the stipend to hire translators for my web shops, so my self-generated income will expand in the near future as well.
I’ll keep you posted on which projects will be realized during the year I receive this stipend through my personal website and this blog.

Coming up: UtrechtDownUnder in a prison!
My work has been selected to be part of the upcoming UtrechtDownUnder exhibition in the city centre of Utrecht (NL). Two years ago the exhibition was held in the cellars of the Oudegracht (canals) in Utrecht, this year the exhibition will be held in the freshly deserted Wolvenplein prison.
Yesterday I went there to have a look at the location and it was very very awesome!
After the break you can see some more photos.

The Big Draw Nijmegen 2014
This week I’m a participating artist at The Big Draw in Nijmegen (NL), a festival about drawing.
I’ll be drawing shit at two locations this week; today I made a small series of drawings at the Valkhof Museum, since the drawing over there had to be finished before the festival starts (which is tomorrow), and from tomorrow until Sunday I’ll draw something on the window of the Dromaai.
Today I made some drawings about my trip to the DPRK. I still have to take decent photos, so until that point you’ll have to look at my wacky phone photos…

This afternoon: artist talk at Kunstenlab, Deventer
This afternoon I’ll be giving an artist talk-lecture-thing about my Rogier project at Kunstenlab, Deventer (NL). Start: 15:00hr. It’s also the last day the exhibition is open for public, so if you’re around, feel free to go and have a look!

DE KIJKDOOS is proud to host solo exhibition Rogier by Joyce Overheul.

DE KIJKDOOS would be pleased to see you at the opening on Friday 4th April 2014 at 5pm till 7pm.
Reading out loud by Joyce Overheul at 6pm
The book will be available for a great price!

Scholars visit ‘Watching (over) me’
Yesterday two groups of school students visited the ‘Watching (over) me’ exhibition at Kunstenlab, Deventer (NL) as part of their educational programme, and made some assignments considering the displayed art projects.
Some of my works are part of the project: 24H, Rogier and Merging Spaces. Click >here< for some more pictures of the exhibition. PICTURES, BABY!
Click >here< to go to Kunstenlab’s website. ‘Watching (over) me’ is still on view until the 13th of April.
New work online: Walther Plush5
New work online: a photo of one of my Walther Plush5’s with a model.
Walther Plush5 is a site specific work I made for Festival de Basis, Soesterberg (NL) in 2013. It’s a crochet replica of one of the current handguns of the Dutch police force, on a 1:1 scale.
The theme of the entire festival was ‘war and peace’, hence the toy guns….
Walther Plush5 has an edition of five. Click >here< to go to the project’s webpage on my portfolio website. (link opens in a new window)
De Torenkamer
From the 7th of the 11th of April I’ll be an artist in residence (kinda) at De Torenkamer (“the tower chamber”), a short period AIR program by Opium op 4 (a Dutch radio show) in a studio in Amsterdam.
For a week I’ll stay at a studio in Amsterdam and make something new, and every day between 23:00h and 24:00h a short radio interview will be held about my progress of that day. On the very last day the work I made will be presented somewhere outside the studio (can’t remember exactly where, atm).
Click >here< to go to the Opium op 4 website, and also see the works and blog posts of current and former participants. (link opens in a new window)
Exhibition update: ‘Privacy’, Kunstenlab, Deventer
Not only the Rogier project will be on view at the exhibition about privacy at Kunstenlab, Deventer (NL), but also Merging Spaces and 24H! That’s a nice development!

Unnoticed Art Festival
I’m happy to announce my work has been selected for the Unnoticed Art Festival! Which work I’ll be showing still remains a secret.
http://unnoticedartfestival.com/
Some info from the website:
“In the spring of 2014Ā 222lodge will be organising a festival for Unnoticed Live Art.Ā
The festival for Unnoticed Art balances on the line between public and private. It shows artworks hiding in normality. The language, used to express the works, fits in the average social behaviour in public space and, because of that, will probably remain unnoticed to bystanders.
The location and dates of the festival will remain secret. That way the passers-by will be accidental and without knowledge of the occasion. They have their own aims, their own occupations, their own thoughts.
After the festival a manifestation will be organised and a book will be published. This will of course be announced clearly.”
They’re still looking for volunteers, so if you want to help: please go to the website and send them an email! š
New exhibitions coming up
Thank nothing-up-there that my agenda isn’t empty! I’m always afraid of the big ol’ scary empty agenda, large white sheets filled with…. absolutely nothing. *insert horror sound over here, please*
Above: the installation at CC: Casco Concreet
12th of January – 2nd of February: CC: Casco Concreet, Utrecht, The Netherlands
So, first of all there’s still a work of mine on view at CC: Casco Concreet in Utrecht. That will run until the 2nd of February, so if you haven’t been there yet, make sure you go to Utrecht asap! (At least on a Wednesday or Sunday, since the exhibition space is open those two days.) The work that’s on view there are the documentation videos of the IT project. Next Wednesday I’ll be there myself too, from 15:30 until 19:00h. There you can also see one of the most pretty chairs in the world, the vintage Gispen chair I inherited from my grandmother.
31st of January-2nd of February: TWK #4, Utrecht, The Netherlands
I’ve donated some parts of works and documentation to the Tijdelijke KunstWinkel #4 in Utrecht (temporary art store). In this pop up art store you can buy art for only 10 euros, and best of it all: all of that 10 euros will go to charity! This year we’re raising money for clean drinking water in Cameroon, the Manganjo project of LiveBuild.
Some websites you might want to check out: http://www.tijdelijkekunstwinkel.nl/ and http://www.livebuild.org/projects/manganjo/
I won’t tell you yet which of my works will be available for purchase, that’s a surprise! (Or go to the temporary art store, of course!)
20th of February-13th of April: Kunstenlab, Deventer, The Netherlands
The Rogier project will be on view here. Yoohoo! The date of the opening isn’t known yet, but as soon as I’ve got more info, I’ll let you know.
27th-30th of March: u topia, Collectief Derde Wal, Nijmegen, The Netherlands
For this exhibition I’m developing at least 1 project concept, and hopefully I’ll be able to finish a new documentary-style video for the show itself too. I still don’t feel like sharing too much about these two new things, but as you can already guess, it will have something to do with the theme ‘utopia’.
So, as you can see there are quite some things coming up…. Yay, no empty agenda!
Update (26/01): My work has also been selected for the Unnoticed Art Festival. Yoohoo!
Exhibition extended: CC: Casco Concreet
My participation in the CC: Casco Concreet exhbition is extended until the end of their show. The video documentation of a series of performances I realized for De Appel Arts Centre, as part of the exhibition ‘Three Artists Walk Into A Bar…’ will be screened until the 2nd of February.
The exhibition space will be opened for public every Wednesday and Sunday, from noon ’til 19hr.
CC: Casco Concreet
Europaplein 702, Utrecht, The Netherlands
