Artist-in-residence at Kunsthal45, Den Helder: new work!

zeemijn001-klein

It’s been awfully quiet on this blog for the last couple months…. but fear not! There’s no reason to worry. I’ve just been awfully busy.

Today I finished an artist-in-residence project at Kunsthal45 in Den Helder (NL) where I made an entirely new work, a naval mine made from transparent organza as part of my soft series. The project will be on view until the 13th of August at the Kunsthal.

Lots of events are coming up meanwhile and after this exhibition, among which:
– Nasty Women Exhibition in Mexico at the Museo Memoria y Tolerancia in Mexico City,
– Utrecht Down Under in (of course) Utrecht,
– And my work will be part of the annual Fotoroute at Windkracht 13 Gallery, Den Helder.

For an extensive overview of all my future plans, please see my >website<

For now, here are some photos of the freshly finished naval mine. The results are really nice, the colours look different from every angle.

Over there I will present a new research project on lying, liespotting and designing your truth. Hope to see you there, the opening starts tomorrow at 17hr sharp! The exhibition will run during opening hours of the venue until the 14th of May.

Have a look at http://www.c-fordt.nl for more info about the exhibition and side program,

Have a look at http://www.rondleidingbijhetfort.nl (Dutch only at this moment) for a sneak peek of my latest project.

I finally extended my online existence to the platform of Patty Morgan.

At this moment I have one fucking follower, #itssomething. Anyway, if you’re on Patty Morgan, feel free to follow me!

I’ll be uploading lots of photos of my work on that profile, it definitely looks more appealing than uploading things on the pay-me-or-no-one-sees-your-posts-Facebook…

Last Saturday I finished shooting documentation material in The Hague for my website and a new performance video.

I’d like to thank all the amazing performers and their efforts, without them it would be impossible to make the documentation of the performance itself a success!!

The video of the performance will be shown for the first time at the BYOB (next Thursday in Utrecht, see this blog post).

For now, here’s a sneak peek!

Hooray! New work for Unnoticed Art Festival

I’m happy to announce I’ll be making a new work for the Unnoticed Art Festival.

Unfortunately for you my dear, this will remain secret until the festival has taken place.

Here’s some more info about the festival:

The Unnoticed Art Festival returns for a second edition this summer, following the first Unnoticed Art Festival in 2014 and the subsequent publication of the book Unnoticed Art.

On June 24/25 the Unnoticed Art Festival will take place in an undisclosed city in the Netherlands.

Hundreds of artists worldwide have responded to an Open Call for performance concepts. From these submissions, a performance program has been compiled by a committee of five artists. The Unnoticed Art performances are to be realized in the public space, on the street, with no explanation and with no fore-warning. The objective is to go by unnoticed. Taking place in everyday settings, these performances involve hiding the unusual within the usual. Passersby may perceive these actions, but will not recognize them as performance art.

A group of thirty participants will perform the Festival’s program. These participants need not be artists. No performance experience is required. All that matters is an interest in the nature of the festival, and a willingness to experiment. These participants have a double role: they will perform the selected works whilst simultaneously acting as the only audience to the event. Since the festival is not announced, these participants are the only ones ‘in the know’ – hence, they are the only audience that is aware of being an audience.

A book will be compiled following the second edition of the Festival. This book will include all the concepts from the program, in addition to presenting the personal experiences of all the participants, as both actors and audience.

The program of this year will include works of:

Alice Vogler (US)
Andrew McNiven (GB)
Bucky Miller (US)
Chris Wildrick (US)

Design My Privacy @ Z33, Hasselt (BE)

Ohh, finally an update from my side!

Things have been rather hectic the last couple months: I moved to a new place, moved my studio (again…), and I started working on 2 new projects. Hence the silence on this blog.

Also my website needs a major update, but hey, I’m working on it! (;

One of the other things that have been going on behind the scenes is that the Design My Privacy exhibition (featuring my project Rogier) is travelling to Z33 in Hasselt, Belgium! Yay!

The show opens next Saturday at 19:30hr. Insert lazy copy-paste from the Z33 website:

27.03.2016 – 29.05.2016
Design my Privacy
Nowadays, we continually share data: a message via WhatsApp, a picture on Instagram, an update on Facebook or an e-mail through Gmail. With whom do we really share this data? And how can we make sure that our personal data stay strictly personal?
This exhibition addresses issues of online privacy and digital surveillance. Next to several historical examples of encrypting, ‘Design my Privacy’ also shows some surprising contemporary strategies by more than 35 young designers and artists to maintain control over our data.

PROGRAM OPENING NIGHT

7:30 p.m. Welcome
– Welcome speech by Igor Philtjens (Deputy of Culture of the Province of Limburg)
– Introduction by Jan Boelen (Artistic director Z33)
– Presentation publication ‘Design my Privacy’ by Mieke Gerritzen (Director MOTI)

20:00 – 22:00 Visit of the new exhibitions
also Toegepast 20

20:00 – 24:00 Reception

LOCATION: Z33 – house for contemporary art, Vleugel ’58, Zuivelmarkt 33, 3500 Hasselt.

Free entrance

1000 cranes – update!

IMG_20150614_170746klein

So I’m currently working on a performance where I’ll fold 1000 cranes according to the Japanese tradition, and I just wanted to share some pictures with you. Things are going steady, and with 4 days of folding/working I already made the railing system to keep all birds up, and folded 172 birds. This might not seem like an awful lot, but the first birds went reeealllly slow, haha.

Keep track of my progress online via Instagram: @joyce1000cranes

Or drop by at Galerie Sanaa, Utrecht on Wednesdays ’til Sundays from 12 until 18hr!

Meanwhile in the studio….

geweer002

…headaches, backaches, any possible aches… long days, short nights…. (and ugly photoshop, as you can see above.)

But the new sculptural piece for the AK47 exhibition is ALMOST finished! Whoohoo!
It’s going to be an extended, kinda over the top version of the Walther Plush5 I made in 2013 for Festival de Basis in Soesterberg (NL). The Kalashnikov-themed exhibiition will be held at Artspace Flipside, Eindhoven (NL), opening on the 29th of May.

Yesterday I almost tore the entire thing apart when I started to stuff it, which brought me on the verge of a mental breakdown, but luckily it didn’t come this far… The pink satin is a real bitch to work with, but it’s going to look very pretty in the end! The rifle is stuffed with roasted sesame seeds (don’t ask..).

Great news!

logosblog-klein

Two days ago I heard I have received a Stipendium Program for Emerging Artists, granted by the Mondriaan Fund!! I’m so happy it almost hurts!

Something about the Mondriaan Fund:
“The Mondriaan Fund is a publicly financed fund for visual art and cultural heritage. It supports innovative projects and activities by visual artists, intermediaries (curators and critics), museums and other heritage organizations, art institutions, archives, galleries and commissioning parties. All grants are awarded with a view to promoting the production and presentation of relevant Dutch visual art and heritage in the Netherlands and abroad, where a commercial market is (yet) undeveloped.”

This will make so many things so much easier in the near future. I was saving money to buy a professional video camera and decent projector but it was taking way too long and it really started to hold me down when exhibiting new projects with non-decent equipment…. So this will be really, really helpful! Also I want to use a part of the stipend to hire translators for my web shops, so my self-generated income will expand in the near future as well.

I’ll keep you posted on which projects will be realized during the year I receive this stipend through my personal website and this blog.

Coming up: UtrechtDownUnder in a prison!

001-klein

My work has been selected to be part of the upcoming UtrechtDownUnder exhibition in the city centre of Utrecht (NL). Two years ago the exhibition was held in the cellars of the Oudegracht (canals) in Utrecht, this year the exhibition will be held in the freshly deserted Wolvenplein prison.

Yesterday I went there to have a look at the location and it was very very awesome!

After the break you can see some more photos.

Afterwards we’ll have a chat/discussion/etc about the film and there will be snacks and drinks.

Last weekend’s things… SWOOF x DPRK lamp at NEST HC!

IMG_20150314_153627

Last weekend was the presentation of the SWOOF x DPRK lamp by Yudo Design!

Yudo Design has created an interactive led table lamp which you can operate with hand movements. They often collaborate with artists and designers to create new skins, the replaceable outer part of the lamp, so lamp owners can easily change the appearance of their lamps themselves. This weekend the lamp will also be on display (and for sale) at NEST at the Hoog Catharijne shopping mall, at the Seats2Meet venue.

Here’s a video on how the SWOOF design works:

11th December: Pecha Kucha Night @ Het Huis, Utrecht

DPRK Pyongyang view from the Grand People's Study House

Upcoming Thursday I’ll be having a chat about the DPRK project at Pecha Kucha Night at Het Huis, Utrecht!

The idea of a Pecha Kucha presentation is that you have 20 images and only talk for 20sec about each of them, so I tweaked the idea a bit and I’m going to show you 20 short clips of 20sec each of the video I made when I was in North Korea!

Above you can see a film still of one of the shots that will be included in the presentation. 🙂

Check out the Pecha Kucha website over >here<, there’s also a Facebook event. In preparation to this presentation, the DPRK project page on my portfolio website will be updated tomorrow, so I’ll also drop a link over here once I’ve finished working on that.

Hope to see you on Thursday!!

The Big Draw Nijmegen 2014

Photo 09-09-14 15 38 45

This week I’m a participating artist at The Big Draw in Nijmegen (NL), a festival about drawing.

I’ll be drawing shit at two locations this week; today I made a small series of drawings at the Valkhof Museum, since the drawing over there had to be finished before the festival starts (which is tomorrow), and from tomorrow until Sunday I’ll draw something on the window of the Dromaai.

Today I made some drawings about my trip to the DPRK. I still have to take decent photos, so until that point you’ll have to look at my wacky phone photos…

Back from the DPRK! Now it’s time for a new project

pyongyang

Hey y’all! I’m back from the DPRK! Safe and sound.

I can say it was the most peculiar trip I ever went on…!
One of the most noticeable things: the food we got on the Air Koryo plane from Beijing to Pyongyang was a hamburger, lol.

I can also say I was there for a reason: I was there to shot new footage for a new video installation project! More about that next week, but for now, above you can see Pyongyang at night. Below you can see a huge drawing I just started, Pyongyang school girls, it’s going to be approx. 300x150cm in size.

I’m not dead yet…

…I’m just REALLY busy. Hence it’s a bit quiet over here.

I moved in my new studio in Utrecht last week, and I’m still working on moving all my stuff to my new work space. Or work spaces, actually, since my new studio has 3 separate rooms in total.

It’s fucking huge.

Love my new mono pod!

Sirui monopod from Fotogrijpink.nl

I’m a sucker for gadgets. That said, it was only a question of time before I got myself a decent mono pod. The one I used before came from some crappy eBay store and was a bit too large to drag around all the time (didn’t fit in any bag or suitcase properly), so that kinda sucked ass…

Foto Grijpink, located in Nijmegen, NL has helped me out with my photography gear before (for instance with the 24H project) and they were happy to help my out on today’s mono pod quest as well! Thanks again guys for your support!

This fancy carbon mono pod is a Sirui P-326 by the way, and it’s really, really light weight (only 400 grams), and it fits in even my smaller backpacks without any problems. Can’t wait to use this baby for picture taking or filming! (:

New work online: Walther Plush5

Walther Plush5

New work online: a photo of one of my Walther Plush5’s with a model.

Walther Plush5 is a site specific work I made for Festival de Basis, Soesterberg (NL) in 2013. It’s a crochet replica of one of the current handguns of the Dutch police force, on a 1:1 scale.

The theme of the entire festival was ‘war and peace’, hence the toy guns….

Walther Plush5 has an edition of five. Click >here< to go to the project’s webpage on my portfolio website. (link opens in a new window)

De Torenkamer

From the 7th of the 11th of April I’ll be an artist in residence (kinda) at De Torenkamer (“the tower chamber”), a short period AIR program by Opium op 4 (a Dutch radio show) in a studio in Amsterdam.

For a week I’ll stay at a studio in Amsterdam and make something new, and every day between 23:00h and 24:00h a short radio interview will be held about my progress of that day. On the very last day the work I made will be presented somewhere outside the studio (can’t remember exactly where, atm).

Nice: found a blog post about my project ‘Rogier’

R-2

Yes, I’m calling the then 17-year-old Rogier a project now. The former title in Dutch wasn’t really working for me anymore. ‘De drie maanden uit het leven van Rogier’, similar to the title of the book, didn’t really do the trick on my website anymore.

I was doing a google search via Safari (where I’m not logged in on any Google- or other account) and came across this blog post by Irene about my project:

http://blogs.klaretaal.com/irene/2013/08/28/hou-het-droog-rogier/

I like it! She really understood the project from what I read in the blog post, which is always nice. I haven’t come across hateful blog posts yet, by the way (but lots of Tweets with mild threats).

(Unfortunately for the non-Dutch readers, the blog post is in Dutch only)

Unnoticed Art Festival

I’m happy to announce my work has been selected for the Unnoticed Art Festival! Which work I’ll be showing still remains a secret.

http://unnoticedartfestival.com/
Some info from the website:

“In the spring of 2014 222lodge will be organising a festival for Unnoticed Live Art.
The festival for Unnoticed Art balances on the line between public and private. It shows artworks hiding in normality. The language, used to express the works, fits in the average social behaviour in public space and, because of that, will probably remain unnoticed to bystanders.

The location and dates of the festival will remain secret. That way the passers-by will be accidental and without knowledge of the occasion. They have their own aims, their own occupations, their own thoughts.

After the festival a manifestation will be organised and a book will be published. This will of course be announced clearly.”

They’re still looking for volunteers, so if you want to help: please go to the website and send them an email! 🙂

New exhibitions coming up

Thank nothing-up-there that my agenda isn’t empty! I’m always afraid of the big ol’ scary empty agenda, large white sheets filled with…. absolutely nothing. *insert horror sound over here, please*

Above: the installation at CC: Casco Concreet

12th of January – 2nd of February: CC: Casco Concreet, Utrecht, The Netherlands

So, first of all there’s still a work of mine on view at CC: Casco Concreet in Utrecht. That will run until the 2nd of February, so if you haven’t been there yet, make sure you go to Utrecht asap! (At least on a Wednesday or Sunday, since the exhibition space is open those two days.) The work that’s on view there are the documentation videos of the IT project. Next Wednesday I’ll be there myself too, from 15:30 until 19:00h. There you can also see one of the most pretty chairs in the world, the vintage Gispen chair I inherited from my grandmother.

31st of January-2nd of February: TWK #4, Utrecht, The Netherlands

I’ve donated some parts of works and documentation to the Tijdelijke KunstWinkel #4 in Utrecht (temporary art store). In this pop up art store you can buy art for only 10 euros, and best of it all: all of that 10 euros will go to charity! This year we’re raising money for clean drinking water in Cameroon, the Manganjo project of LiveBuild.

Some websites you might want to check out: http://www.tijdelijkekunstwinkel.nl/ and http://www.livebuild.org/projects/manganjo/

I won’t tell you yet which of my works will be available for purchase, that’s a surprise! (Or go to the temporary art store, of course!)

20th of February-13th of April: Kunstenlab, Deventer, The Netherlands

The Rogier project will be on view here. Yoohoo! The date of the opening isn’t known yet, but as soon as I’ve got more info, I’ll let you know.

27th-30th of March: u topia, Collectief Derde Wal, Nijmegen, The Netherlands

For this exhibition I’m developing at least 1 project concept, and hopefully I’ll be able to finish a new documentary-style video for the show itself too. I still don’t feel like sharing too much about these two new things, but as you can already guess, it will have something to do with the theme ‘utopia’.

So, as you can see there are quite some things coming up…. Yay, no empty agenda!

Update (26/01): My work has also been selected for the Unnoticed Art Festival. Yoohoo!

New website! Well, major update…

Sometimes you forget to do stuff…. And sometimes you forget to update your website properly for.. 3 years? And yep, that’s what I did.

So I was stuck at home waiting for my flu to go taunt someone else, and I decided to build myself a new website. You know, those boring jobs that can take days… And that’s probably also the reason I didn’t update my previous website that often, and when I did it, I didn’t really do a good job.

Here it is, tahdahdaaah! Go have a look: www.j-o-y-c-e.com (link opens in a new window)

Short summary: less text, more and larger images, less unnecessary shit… 🙂

Since websites are still these organic things that keep on changing and changing, feel free to let me know what you think of this update! Feel free to share your suggestions for future updates or minor changes.

Here’s a trailer of the 24 hour real time film, where I followed a random person exactly for 1 day (without editing the film afterwards, or applying censorship during filming), to see what happens if someone starts to share everything (and can’t escape it either for one day).
