The Big Draw 2014 at De Dromaai

So in the end I made drawings at the Valkhof Museum (theme: Pyongyang) and at De Dromaai (theme: cats).

The cat drawings turned out to be a huge success! I overheard people talking about them at a place which wasn’t even close to the actual drawings, so that’s great. I didn’t really get any further responses from the Valkhof Museum about the drawings about whether they liked them or not, except from the maintenance guys (who, luckily, thought they were pretty neat).

The Big Draw Nijmegen 2014

This week I’m a participating artist at The Big Draw in Nijmegen (NL), a festival about drawing.

I’ll be drawing shit at two locations this week; today I made a small series of drawings at the Valkhof Museum, since the drawing over there had to be finished before the festival starts (which is tomorrow), and from tomorrow until Sunday I’ll draw something on the window of the Dromaai.

Today I made some drawings about my trip to the DPRK. I still have to take decent photos, so until that point you’ll have to look at my wacky phone photos…

DPRK: 3 film stills to still your hunger

DPRK Pyongyang view from the Grand People's Study House

I started working on editing the videos I shot in the DPRK for my new video installation. Here are 3 film stills of scenes I really like.

And look at how clean and neat Pyongyang looks in the bottom still! North Korea may have a terrible reputation internationally, but in the centre of Pyongyang everything was ridiculously clean and looked really, really nice…

Back from the DPRK! Now it’s time for a new project

pyongyang

Hey y’all! I’m back from the DPRK! Safe and sound.

I can say it was the most peculiar trip I ever went on…!
One of the most noticeable things: the food we got on the Air Koryo plane from Beijing to Pyongyang was a hamburger, lol.

I can also say I was there for a reason: I was there to shot new footage for a new video installation project! More about that next week, but for now, above you can see Pyongyang at night. Below you can see a huge drawing I just started, Pyongyang school girls, it’s going to be approx. 300x150cm in size.

No internet. My world is dying.

korea

Yes, I’m feeling quite melodramatic because of this.

From the 10th until the 24th of August I’ll be traveling to Beijing, China and North Korea (yes, yes!) and I won’t have ANY internet.

This feels like a serious problem. I’ve never been without internet for that long since I was… 12? My income, my web shop, my work… everything depends on the bloody internet.

If you want to contact me, feel free to do so, but keep in mind I won’t reply until I’m back home. I won’t be reachable over phone either, but if all hell breaks loose for whatever reason, you can send me an email anyway and my partner will get back to you shortly.

The good news is that I finally felt like drawing again (for the first time in years), while preparing for my trip. Above you can see a simple line drawing I made of the Workers’ Party Monument in Pyongyang.
