Young Utrecht Delight @ Galerie Sanaa, Utrecht

28th of April-9th of June: Young Utrecht-based (or related) artists at Galerie Sanaa!

My brain was quite foggy last couple weeks so I didn’t think about updating this blog earlier… hence the silence, hence this can’t really count as an announcement anymore, but at least there are some pictures of the fun we had.

If you pay close attention to the photos you might even see a new work…….

Some text from the Sanaa website (yes, I’m lazy beyond belief today):

Galerie Sanaa presents Young Utrecht Delight. Showing the combined but diverse work of young HKU alumni. Jessica Skowroneck shows pure paintings that radiates with light. RaQuel van Haver is interested in the interaction and abrasion between identity, background and ethnicity. Guy Vording looks for photographs and texts that almost always have to do with events where the control is lost. In the sculptural paintings of Cecilia Rebergen she searches for the boundaries of the painted object. Joyce Overheul creates and manipulates human behavior and confronts people with their own actions through multiple media. Benine du Toit analyses tensions, emotion and reluctance toward one another in South Africa. Mariaan van den Berg focuses on adaptability through her spacial works. The work of Robert Roest is visually rooted in both the contemporary world of new media as in the history of painting.

‘ALLES KOMT GOED’

In the summer of 2016 Atelier014 first opened its doors in the Hardebollenstraat.

Something over 1.5 years, 26 exhibitions, many experiences and LOTS OF FUN later, we have to leave our space.

Unsure about our future, but certain of our goal: keep offering an experimental platform to artists in Utrecht.

To make our last month(s) count, we are transforming Atelier014 into an Artists Club.
A meeting place for artists and creatives to network and exchange ideas.

‘ALLES KOMT GOED’ is a mass exhibition in the Artists Club, showing work of over 30 artists. Let’s make some noise !
It’s about time.

The very busy opening weekend: Utrecht Down Under, Cruising by Night, Fotoroute Den Helder

Last Saturday I finished shooting documentation material in The Hague for my website and a new performance video.

I’d like to thank all the amazing performers and their efforts, without them it would be impossible to make the documentation of the performance itself a success!!

The video of the performance will be shown for the first time at the BYOB (next Thursday in Utrecht, see this blog post).

For now, here’s a sneak peek!

Special thanks goes to: Jowi Kemper, Heekyung Ryu, Giovanni Maisto Ferreira, Michiel Tollig, Mandy Chaigneau, Ilona Schipper, Marisa Conde, Vincent Baeza Parra, Ken Bridgen, Jolanda Jansen, Sarah Atzori, Alessandro, Herwin Zweers

1000 cranes – update!

IMG_20150614_170746klein

So I’m currently working on a performance where I’ll fold 1000 cranes according to the Japanese tradition, and I just wanted to share some pictures with you. Things are going steady, and with 4 days of folding/working I already made the railing system to keep all birds up, and folded 172 birds. This might not seem like an awful lot, but the first birds went reeealllly slow, haha.

Keep track of my progress online via Instagram: @joyce1000cranes

Or drop by at Galerie Sanaa, Utrecht on Wednesdays ’til Sundays from 12 until 18hr!

Some publications

Over the last couple weeks my crochet designs got published in two magazines, Let’s Knit Magazine and Homespun Australia!

bladen-klein

Also, I finally received a copy of Freedom in Action, a doctoral thesis by a friend of mine, Niels van Miltenburg. He asked me to design a cover based on the poem “The Road not Taken” by Robert Frost:

freedominaction-klein

(just to be clear: that black bar wasn’t my idea… it’s the standard layout for all theses over there…. it’s horrific.)

And…. last but not least, my work kinda got featured in Dutch newspaper Trouw! Julie van der Hove wrote a small article about the Utrecht Down Under exhibition at the Wolvenplein prison, and mentioned the DPRK project. It’s a paid-for article so I won’t copy everything here, just the part where you can read about my work:

I have tons of things on my mind (deadlines for 2 exhibitions, a workshop coming up, etc), hence this blog post is REALLY short.

Oh, and my work got featured on Mister Motley’s blog!

My work has been selected to be part of the upcoming UtrechtDownUnder exhibition in the city centre of Utrecht (NL). Two years ago the exhibition was held in the cellars of the Oudegracht (canals) in Utrecht, this year the exhibition will be held in the freshly deserted Wolvenplein prison.

Yesterday I went there to have a look at the location and it was very very awesome!

After the break you can see some more photos.

16:00 sharp, be there!

Afterwards we’ll have a chat/discussion/etc about the film and there will be snacks and drinks.

Last weekend’s things… SWOOF x DPRK lamp at NEST HC!

IMG_20150314_153627

Last weekend was the presentation of the SWOOF x DPRK lamp by Yudo Design!

Yudo Design has created an interactive led table lamp which you can operate with hand movements. They often collaborate with artists and designers to create new skins, the replaceable outer part of the lamp, so lamp owners can easily change the appearance of their lamps themselves. This weekend the lamp will also be on display (and for sale) at NEST at the Hoog Catharijne shopping mall, at the Seats2Meet venue.

Here’s a video on how the SWOOF design works:

Upcoming: Exhibition “De Belofte Ingelost”

IMG_20150116_192148

Opening on the 7th of February: the anniversary edition of De Belofte (“the promise”) exhibition series at Kunstliefde. This year the De Belofte-programme exists for 10 years and this exhibition shows you previous participants of the last 10 years, including meeee! Yoohoo!

There’s an opening party on the 8th of February starting at 16:00hr at Kunstliefde. The exhibition will be opened by Frank Koolen, artist and tutor at the Utrecht School of the Arts, who lectured many of the participating artists (again, including meeee).

At this exhibition the video I made while I was in the DPRK will be shown, together with some souvenirs, an essay/travel journal-thingy I wrote for this exhibition and a podcast describing all the things I was not allowed to capture on video.

Hope to see you there!! It’s going to be a great exhibition.

11th of January: DPRK project @ PechaKucha Night Utrecht / Cultural Sundays!

culturelezondagenpromovoorblog

This Sunday I’ll be giving another short artist talk about the DPRK project, again at PechaKucha Night Utrecht, but this time the event is also part of Cultural Sundays (Culturele Zondagen).

Hope to see you there at the Winkel van Sinkel in Utrecht (NL), 16:15hr sharp!

11th December: Pecha Kucha Night @ Het Huis, Utrecht

DPRK Pyongyang view from the Grand People's Study House

Upcoming Thursday I’ll be having a chat about the DPRK project at Pecha Kucha Night at Het Huis, Utrecht!

The idea of a Pecha Kucha presentation is that you have 20 images and only talk for 20sec about each of them, so I tweaked the idea a bit and I’m going to show you 20 short clips of 20sec each of the video I made when I was in North Korea!

Above you can see a film still of one of the shots that will be included in the presentation. 🙂

Check out the Pecha Kucha website over >here<, there’s also a Facebook event. In preparation to this presentation, the DPRK project page on my portfolio website will be updated tomorrow, so I’ll also drop a link over here once I’ve finished working on that.

Hope to see you on Thursday!!

26th of September: Bring Your Own Beamer – Eyes Everywhere

Photo 25-09-14 15 52 15

https://www.facebook.com/events/323835694459125/

Tomorrow the video I made about the DPRK will be on view for the first time ever at the Bring Your Own Beamer event, hosted by SETUP MediaLab at TivoliVredenburg in Utrecht (NL).

The fun starts at 19:30hr, so be there..!

SETUP also made a video about me and the DPRK project, which you can watch >over here<.

In case you wonder: yes, I do own an awful lot of scratching posts, and yes, that is a picture which has an Instagram… If you’re on Instagram, feel free to follow me, by the way. (:

20th of September: Artist talk at Vechtclub XL

006

Vechtclub XL is a new creative hotspot in Utrecht, and it’s ready to open! Join us on the opening weekend on the 19th, 20th and 21st of September.

I’ll be giving an artist talk about the making-of of the Rogier project.

Click >here< for Vechtclub’s Facebook event.

Soon: Bring Your Own Beamer, 26th of September

Well allright… I won’t bring my own beamer since I don’t own one, but luckily a friend of mine was so kind to lend me his. The idea is that artists can sign up for this event and show their work during one evening, as long as they bring their own beamer. Nice, right?

Setup Medialab, located in Utrecht, The Netherlands, was so kind to make a promo video about me and the work I will be showing at this BYOB at TivoliVreedenburg on the 26th:

The work I’ll be presenting there will be the DPRK project. Some shots are included in the video below, among which a short part of the little kid’s performance which was shown to us at an after school care facility.

Thanks goes to Anna Berlis (website) for shooting the video. I really like it!

I’m not dead yet…

…I’m just REALLY busy. Hence it’s a bit quiet over here.

I moved in my new studio in Utrecht last week, and I’m still working on moving all my stuff to my new work space. Or work spaces, actually, since my new studio has 3 separate rooms in total.

It’s fucking huge.

Some pictures (of course, they’re panorama shots so the walls look a bit funky):

New exhibitions coming up

Thank nothing-up-there that my agenda isn’t empty! I’m always afraid of the big ol’ scary empty agenda, large white sheets filled with…. absolutely nothing. *insert horror sound over here, please*

DSC_7609

Above: the installation at CC: Casco Concreet

12th of January – 2nd of February: CC: Casco Concreet, Utrecht, The Netherlands

So, first of all there’s still a work of mine on view at CC: Casco Concreet in Utrecht. That will run until the 2nd of February, so if you haven’t been there yet, make sure you go to Utrecht asap! (At least on a Wednesday or Sunday, since the exhibition space is open those two days.) The work that’s on view there are the documentation videos of the IT project. Next Wednesday I’ll be there myself too, from 15:30 until 19:00h. There you can also see one of the most pretty chairs in the world, the vintage Gispen chair I inherited from my grandmother.

31st of January-2nd of February: TWK #4, Utrecht, The Netherlands

I’ve donated some parts of works and documentation to the Tijdelijke KunstWinkel #4 in Utrecht (temporary art store). In this pop up art store you can buy art for only 10 euros, and best of it all: all of that 10 euros will go to charity! This year we’re raising money for clean drinking water in Cameroon, the Manganjo project of LiveBuild.

Some websites you might want to check out: http://www.tijdelijkekunstwinkel.nl/ and http://www.livebuild.org/projects/manganjo/

I won’t tell you yet which of my works will be available for purchase, that’s a surprise! (Or go to the temporary art store, of course!)

20th of February-13th of April: Kunstenlab, Deventer, The Netherlands

The Rogier project will be on view here. Yoohoo! The date of the opening isn’t known yet, but as soon as I’ve got more info, I’ll let you know.

27th-30th of March: u topia, Collectief Derde Wal, Nijmegen, The Netherlands

For this exhibition I’m developing at least 1 project concept, and hopefully I’ll be able to finish a new documentary-style video for the show itself too. I still don’t feel like sharing too much about these two new things, but as you can already guess, it will have something to do with the theme ‘utopia’.

So, as you can see there are quite some things coming up…. Yay, no empty agenda!

Update (26/01): My work has also been selected for the Unnoticed Art Festival. Yoohoo!

Exhibition extended: CC: Casco Concreet

IT - Performance no.2, Leidseplein

My participation in the CC: Casco Concreet exhbition is extended until the end of their show. The video documentation of a series of performances I realized for De Appel Arts Centre, as part of the exhibition ‘Three Artists Walk Into A Bar…’ will be screened until the 2nd of February.
The exhibition space will be opened for public every Wednesday and Sunday, from noon ’til 19hr.

CC: Casco Concreet
Europaplein 702, Utrecht, The Netherlands
Stay up to date about this exhbition and the other artists involved trough Facebook: http://www.facebook.com/CascoConcreet

New screening! 12th of January, Nieuwjaarsduik at CC: Casco Concreet

24H, filmstill

My film 24H (formerly known as iFollow) will be on screen at the extra opening of CC: Casco Concreet (don’t know why they’re having an ‘extra opening, but hey.. I’m not complaining), from 11:00 ’til 20:00.

Here’s a trailer of the 24 hour real time film, where I followed a random person exactly for 1 day (without editing the film afterwards, or applying censorship during filming), to see what happens if someone starts to share everything (and can’t escape it either for one day).

Joyce Overheul, artist / iFollow – online trailer from Joyce Overheul on Vimeo.

When/Where:
CC: Casco Concreet, Europaplein 702, Utrecht, The Netherlands
The exhibition space is open for public from 11:00 ’til 20:00.
