Last Saturday I finished shooting documentation material in The Hague for my website and a new performance video.
I’d like to thank all the amazing performers and their efforts, without them it would be impossible to make the documentation of the performance itself a success!!
The video of the performance will be shown for the first time at the BYOB (next Thursday in Utrecht, see this blog post).
For now, here’s a sneak peek!
Special thanks goes to: Jowi Kemper, Heekyung Ryu, Giovanni Maisto Ferreira, Michiel Tollig, Mandy Chaigneau, Ilona Schipper, Marisa Conde, Vincent Baeza Parra, Ken Bridgen, Jolanda Jansen, Sarah Atzori, Alessandro, Herwin Zweers
As part of the BYOB and Dutch Film Festival, an excerpt of my 1000 CRANES performance video is currently on view at Hutspot, Utrecht!
Upcoming Thursday the annual BYOB will be held in Utrecht at the old post office at Neude square, I will be showing a new work that evening. Hope to see you there!
BYOB Utrecht 2015 was fun! I showed two videos that evening, the first performance video of 1000 CRANES and Untitled (for ☐topia).

Opening on the 7th of February: the anniversary edition of De Belofte (“the promise”) exhibition series at Kunstliefde. This year the De Belofte-programme exists for 10 years and this exhibition shows you previous participants of the last 10 years, including meeee! Yoohoo!
There’s an opening party on the 8th of February starting at 16:00hr at Kunstliefde. The exhibition will be opened by Frank Koolen, artist and tutor at the Utrecht School of the Arts, who lectured many of the participating artists (again, including meeee).
At this exhibition the video I made while I was in the DPRK will be shown, together with some souvenirs, an essay/travel journal-thingy I wrote for this exhibition and a podcast describing all the things I was not allowed to capture on video.
Hope to see you there!! It’s going to be a great exhibition.

I still need to update my web page about though, the video I made in North Korea will be online very very soon!
Upcoming Thursday I’ll be having a chat about the DPRK project at Pecha Kucha Night at Het Huis, Utrecht!
The idea of a Pecha Kucha presentation is that you have 20 images and only talk for 20sec about each of them, so I tweaked the idea a bit and I’m going to show you 20 short clips of 20sec each of the video I made when I was in North Korea!
Above you can see a film still of one of the shots that will be included in the presentation. 🙂
Check out the Pecha Kucha website over >here<, there’s also a Facebook event. In preparation to this presentation, the DPRK project page on my portfolio website will be updated tomorrow, so I’ll also drop a link over here once I’ve finished working on that.
Hope to see you on Thursday!!
Coming up! Another Bring Your Own Beamer (BYOB) at MOTI (Museum of the Image) in Breda, The Netherlands!! –> Friday the 29th of November, starting at eight o’ clock.
Two projects of mine will be on view that night, DPRK and Untitled (for utopia). Above you can see a film still of Untitled (for utopia), video no.3, “Ger”. Click >here< to watch the entire video.
Upcoming exhibition at City Campus MAX: Urban Paradise
Opening: 10th of October, 19:00hr. On view until the 2nd of November (only open on weekends from 13:00-17:00hr).
Participating artists: Thera Clazing, Daniëlle Frenken, Ivor Helberg, Joyce Overheul, Robert Roest, Yentl van Stokkum, Mayke Verhoeven.
Hope to see you there! 🙂
Tomorrow the video I made about the DPRK will be on view for the first time ever at the Bring Your Own Beamer event, hosted by SETUP MediaLab at TivoliVredenburg in Utrecht (NL).
The fun starts at 19:30hr, so be there..!
SETUP also made a video about me and the DPRK project, which you can watch >over here<.
In case you wonder: yes, I do own an awful lot of scratching posts, and yes, that is a picture which has an Instagram… If you’re on Instagram, feel free to follow me, by the way. (:
I started working on editing the videos I shot in the DPRK for my new video installation. Here are 3 film stills of scenes I really like.
And look at how clean and neat Pyongyang looks in the bottom still! North Korea may have a terrible reputation internationally, but in the centre of Pyongyang everything was ridiculously clean and looked really, really nice…
Hey y’all! I’m back from the DPRK! Safe and sound.
I can say it was the most peculiar trip I ever went on…!
One of the most noticeable things: the food we got on the Air Koryo plane from Beijing to Pyongyang was a hamburger, lol.
I can also say I was there for a reason: I was there to shot new footage for a new video installation project! More about that next week, but for now, above you can see Pyongyang at night. Below you can see a huge drawing I just started, Pyongyang school girls, it’s going to be approx. 300x150cm in size.
